Cabin Front Door Makeover Before and After
The front door is one of the first things people notice about a home, so even small updates can make a big impact. Our cabin front porch felt dated and was inefficient, but instead of taking on a major exterior renovation, we focused on a few classic improvements. A new front door, fresh paint, updated lighting and hardware, plus a couple of finishing touches completely transformed the space. Today, I’m sharing everything we changed and the designer decisions behind each update!

We toured many high elevation properties and ultimately landed on the first one we stepped into— this place immediately felt like home and the perfect option for us! Everything We Wanted to Update
One of my favorite things about this makeover is how approachable it is. None of these projects were expensive or complicated, but together they made a dramatic difference. Someday, we plan to paint or re-stain the exterior, but for now… this felt like instant gratification within our budget. The existing door (pictured above and below) was hollow core, a simple slab, and allowed so much air in and out. The threshold was also rotted out. If you’re looking for an easy way to improve curb appeal, this is exactly where I’d start.
- Replace the front door
- Paint the door
- Install new front door hardware (with a smart lock)
- Swap the porch light for a larger fixture
- Add a new doormat
- Style the porch (planter, stacked wood, greenery, etc)
Before & After
The best part about this project is how little we actually changed. The siding, architecture, and porch all stayed the same. We simply updated the elements that felt tired, and suddenly the entire front door vignette feels warmer, more inviting, and much more reflective of the rustic meets modern style we’re aiming for.
Why I Chose This Front Door
Whenever I’m selecting a front door, I think beyond what’s trending. It’s a long term investment, so I want something that will still feel classic years from now. For our cabin, I chose a classic panel design with a window that complements the architecture instead of competing with it. The proportions feel balanced, the style is timeless, it allows more natural light into the mudroom.
The Power of Paint
Paint is one of the easiest ways to personalize your home’s exterior. I always start by looking at the finishes that aren’t changing— like the deck, roof, siding, and surrounding landscape. Those permanent materials should guide every decision. Choosing a paint color that works with those creates a home that feels cohesive.
Did you know you can color match any paint swatch at Lowe’s? I had my heart set on Rustique (a pretty red swatch), so I had it color mixed at the paint counter while I grabbed the doormat from Lowe’s. I know what you’re thinking… it looks almost identical to the previous door color. That was actually my inspiration. When we first toured the cabin, I loved the red door. I’ve always wanted a red door! It felt kismet, and like I was bringing part of the original cabin into our renovated vision… a signature aesthetic that nods to the past.
A Better Porch Light
Lighting is often overlooked, but it has a huge impact on curb appeal. The original fixture felt too small for the scale of the entry. Replacing it with a larger lantern instantly made the cabin feel more custom and intentional. One of my favorite designer tricks is paying close attention to proportion. A properly sized light fixture almost always looks more expensive than an undersized one.
Smart Exterior Door Hardware
Door hardware is something you use every single day, so it’s worth choosing quality pieces. The new hardware feels substantial, functions beautifully, and coordinates with the porch light— without looking overly matched. We needed a smart lock for this property, and this might be the one aesthetic option on the market. It’s subtle! You barely notice the keypad and it doesn’t have protruding or clunky buttons. It’s very sleek for being a digital lock.
The Finishing Touches
Styling is what makes an entry feel welcoming. While we might like to update this porch someday, I kept it intentionally simple for now… with a classic doormat and one oversized planter. It’s proof that you don’t need a lot of decor to make a home feel inviting. In my opinion, the architecture should always be the star.

Everything I used for the front porch was incredibly budget friendly… the door was less than $350, the sconce less than $100, and the doormat less than $35. It’s proof that simple, inexpensive swaps can be tasteful and impactful. Everything was in stock and easy to grab from my local Lowe’s.

Focus on quality over quantity. A well proportioned light fixture, heavy hardware, one substantial planter, and a classic doormat go much further than lots of small accessories.
I color matched paint from Lowe’s to this swatch: Rustique AF-275. I recommend choosing a color that works with your home’s permanent finishes. Rich greens, warm blacks, earthy browns, and rust hues were all considerations for our mountain setting.

Our cabin front door makeover is proof you don’t need a full renovation to create a beautiful first impression. A handful of thoughtful updates completely changed the look and feel of the front of our cabin, and every time we walk down the stairs, it feels a little more like the cabin we’re working toward.
