If you missed my side yard garden DIY, six years ago we decided to turn an unused neglected area into a charming little garden. Since then, we’ve also tiled over our existing concrete patio to create a more welcoming and functional backyard… not to mention, the addition of our outdoor kitchen. Our outdoor living spaces have certainly come a long way since we moved in, but there is plenty left to do. Here are some essentials that instantly give you that classic secret garden aesthetic.

Classic & Chic Outdoor Living Essentials

Cute Garden Shed with Sconces and Window Planters

There’s a certain romance in the classics that I always come back to when designing an outdoor space. These are pieces that feel collected rather than curated. Timeless terracotta planters, soft landscape lighting casting a golden glow at dusk, the tailored structure of classic lattice with vines beginning to climb… these are the details that give a backyard or patio character- even if it’s brand new. These elements soften a space and make everything feel intentional and chic. If you want your outdoor living areas to feel timeless, try including a handful of these…

Patio Fountain

1. A Fountain

A backyard fountain feels old world chic, reminiscent of European courtyards and gardens. The soft sound of water creates a calming focal point while making any outdoor living space feel timeless.

Lattice Trellis

2. A Lattice Trellis

A lattice trellis has a way of making a garden feel established and adds just enough structure without feeling heavy. Once greenery starts to climb, it creates that soft, romantic backdrop you see in traditional gardens. It also makes a great screen for hiding eyesores.

Terracotta Planters

3. Classic Terracotta Planters

Terracotta planters are one thing I love to collect and can never have enough of. The color is warm, the texture feels natural, and they somehow make everything look better without trying too hard. They just get better with age and patina!

Landscape Lighting

4. Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is one of those upgrades you don’t know you need until you have it. It completely changes how a backyard feels at night. It adds that soft, ambient glow that makes everything feel a little more relaxed and romantic. I always think it’s the difference between a space you look at and one you actually want to sit in. Here’s where to install outdoor DIY solar landscape lighting, if you’re not sure where to start!

Raised Garden Beds

5. Raised Garden Beds

Raised garden beds are one of the easiest ways to make a backyard feel more put together and functional. They add structure right away, even if you’re just getting started. I also love that they make gardening feel a lot more manageable and less messy. Garden to table is always chic!

Marble Table

6. A Marble Table

A marble table is one of those pieces that instantly elevates a garden. Marble actually does great outside and patinas beautifully. Whether you’re using it as a potting surface or setting it up as a little bistro spot for morning coffee, it feels timeless and a bit indulgent in the best way. It adds that European charm that makes the space feel special.

Paver Patio or Limestone Sidewalk

7. A Paver Patio or Sidewalk

A paver patio or limestone path instantly grounds a space and makes it feel established. I love the look of tumbled stone because it has that softened, aged feel, like it has always been there. It brings in just enough texture, traction, and structure to make everything around it feel well designed.

Wrought Iron Fencing

8. Wrought Iron Fencing

Wrought iron fencing adds that classic, tailored edge that makes a garden or yard feel finished. It has a light, airy presence but still defines the space functionally, which I love. It always reminds me of European gardens where everything has structure, but still feels relaxed. Bonus points for swirling details and chic curves.

White String Lights

9. String Lights

String lights are one of the easiest ways to make a backyard feel warm and welcoming. That soft glow overhead instantly shifts the mood and makes you want to linger longer. It’s simple, but it works every single time. Instant ambiance!

Wood Garden Bench

10. A Garden Bench

A garden bench is a must… it invites you into the space and is a good reminder to slow down, sit, and recharge. All well loved gardens have a chic bench, and it’s a great additional surface to rest plants or tools.

11. Flowering Plants

Flowering plants bring in that soft, romantic layer that makes a garden feel alive! There’s something about blooms that instantly elevates everything around them, adding color and movement. Is there anything more chic than roses climbing a trellis? It doesn’t get better than that.

Obelisk Trellis

12. Obelisk Trellis

An obelisk trellis adds vertical height every garden needs. The sculptural shape draws your eye upward and gives climbing plants a functional structure to grow into. It’s simple, but it adds a ton of character.

Woven Willow Garden Edging

13. Woven Edging

Woven willow edging adds that soft, organic detail that makes a garden feel relaxed and natural- yet pulled together. I love how it defines a space without feeling harsh, and it brings in that subtle, old-world organic charm that feels timeless.

Iron Window Planter Box

14. Window Planter Boxes

Window planter boxes draw your eye to the architecture and add a layer of texture and color where you notice it most. A little greenery or a mix of blooms with trailing plants that spill over the edge feel extra romantic while making everything feel more polished and cared for. Here’s how to install window flower boxes!

Greenhouse

15. A Greenhouse

A greenhouse is definitely a luxury, but if you have the space, it’s such a beautiful one. It creates a dedicated place to slow down, tend to plants, and extend the growing season, all while adding a really striking architectural moment to your backyard. It feels equal parts functional and indulgent in the best way!

What I Would Buy First (If I Had to Choose)

Two Terracotta Planters with Topiary and Garden Bench

Our garden and outdoor living space has been a work in progress since we moved in (and there’s still plenty to do). Over the past 7-8 years, I’ve slowly added pieces to our collection. If you’re not trying to buy everything at once, I’d prioritize these…

  • Two large statement planters
  • A raised bed or two
  • A vertical element like a trellis or obelisk
  • Some sort of seating (like a garden bench)

Mistakes I See All the Time

Let me save you from a few common mistakes I see often in outdoor design, as we’re gearing up for spring and summer…

  • Buying planters that are too small
  • Ignoring vertical space
  • Skipping outdoor lighting and landscape lighting
  • Using furniture and decor that doesn’t belong outside, or isn’t wet-rated
  • Not using outdoor space to the full potential (like our side yard garden)
  • Skipping storage or furniture covers

Questions?

What essentials would you recommend for a small terrace, patio, or balcony?

Focus on vertical pieces like trellises and wall planters. Choose fewer, larger planters instead of many small ones to avoid visual clutter.

Any recommendations on lighting the perimeter of a yard?

These are the best fence post solar lights for a classic look… we have these and love them!

How do I make my backyard feel more cohesive?

Stick to a consistent color palette and repeat materials. Too many finishes can make the space feel disconnected.

Do you also plant herbs in your garden?

I do! I also like to keep some in the kitchen on my window sill. Check out my DIY herb garden here.

  1. Amazing tips this morning Sarah! The pieces you’ve shared are like a capsule wardrobe for outdoor spaces. I’ll be coming back to this post as my checklist. We have slowly been checking off our outdoor spaces since moving in, and though we have a long way to go, we’ve made significant progress. I’m excited for our big outdoor projects this year. It will completely transform an unused and ugly side of our yard, and also tie into the garden on the opposite side of the yard. Outdoor spaces can feel so overwhelming. My biggest tip for anyone just getting started is to focus on the area you’ll spend time. Just having a space to relax and view your yard from various angles really gets the wheels turning and is a fantastic motivator. Also- it takes time! We’ve lived here 9 years and progress feels slow sometimes, but having an intentional and well planned outdoor area isn’t a weekend project! I love all the items and tips you shared here. I hope you had a productive weekend.
