Timeless Tile Picks from Wayfair
Tile is one of those design decisions that can easily make or break a space. Choose well and it will still look timeless ten years from now. Choose poorly and suddenly the entire room feels dated. When I’m sourcing tile for projects, I usually start with classic materials and simple shapes. Wayfair has actually become a surprisingly great source for these staples- especially when I’m looking for affordable options that work in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and even fireplaces. Today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite timeless tile picks from Wayfair and the categories I tend to come back to again and again when designing a room that will age well. If you have an upcoming renovation, I hope this is helpful!

If you happen to be installing or replacing your backsplash, definitely give this post a read: how to tile a backsplash the easy way using Mussel Bound. We’ve been installing backsplash tile like that for years, and it has been a game changer. Let’s dive into tile selection…
Subway and Single Piece Tile

If you forced me to choose one tile style that will always work, it would be subway tile or a simple single piece field tile. This is the tile equivalent of a great white button down shirt. It works with everything, it layers beautifully with other materials, and it never feels trendy. Subway tile has been around since the early 1900s. That kind of longevity is always a good sign.

When selecting subway tile or single piece tile from Wayfair, I typically look for a few specific qualities:
- Slight variation in the glaze
- Handmade or zellige finishes
- Classic proportions (3 x 6, 2.5 x 8, 4 x 4, or 6 x 6)
Subtle imperfections add depth so the tile feels custom or handmade instead of builder grade. I used a similar subway tile approach in our kitchen renovation where I wanted the backsplash to feel classic but not overly polished. A slightly varied glaze catches the light beautifully and adds interest without looking too trendy. If you love versatility, this category is the safest bet. Subway tile works with traditional kitchens, modern bathrooms, and everything in between… when installed correctly. Here’s how to make subway tile look classic, not basic!
Marble Tile

Marble tile is one of my favorite ways to bring a timeless material into a space. There is a reason marble has been used in architecture for centuries. The natural veining instantly adds depth, movement, and a richness that manufactured tile can’t replicate.

When I’m browsing Wayfair marble tile, I tend to focus on classic formats like:
- Carrara marble subway
- Marble hex or penny tile
- Large format marble
- Basketweave mosaics
- Marble base or trim pieces
Carrara marble is especially versatile. The soft gray veining pairs easily with brass hardware, polished nickel, warm woods, and painted cabinetry. One of the biggest advantages of marble tile is how it elevates even the simplest space. Marble offers unmatched natural beauty and character. Personally, I love marble most in bathrooms, backsplashes, and fireplaces where the material can really be a focal point.
Mosaic Tile

Mosaic tile is where design gets fun. Small scale patterns add texture and personality without overwhelming a space, especially when the material itself stays classic.

Some of my favorite mosaic tile styles from Wayfair include:
- Penny tile
- Hexagon mosaics
- Herringbone mosaics
- Greek key borders
- Basketweave patterns
- Mini brick mosaics
These work perfectly in places where you need a little visual interest and texture. Think shower floors, niche accents, powder room backsplashes, or laundry rooms. One trick I often use is pairing mosaic tile with a larger field tile. The contrast in scale creates dimension while still keeping the overall palette cohesive. For example, a marble hex mosaic shower floor paired with marble subway tile walls feels thoughtful and layered without being complicated. It gives you a timeless monochromatic aesthetic. If you love pattern but want to keep things timeless, mosaic tile is the sweet spot.
How I Choose Timeless Tile

Whenever I’m selecting tile for a project, I run it through a quick mental checklist. Is the material classic? Is the shape simple? Will it still look good with different cabinet or paint colors in ten years? Does it complement the architecture of the home?

If the answer is yes to all four, it usually lands in the timeless category. Tile is not something most homeowners want to redo every few years, which is why leaning toward classic materials like subway tile, marble tile, and mosaic tile always pays off. Wayfair has become one of my favorite places to browse these staples because the selection is surprisingly large and it’s easy to compare styles quickly, when saving them to a list. I make lists for everything!

Use trim pieces… it makes any tile installation look custom, tailored, and higher-end. Pencil trim, baseboard tile, or chair rail can really enhance the overall aesthetic.
You can! You just have to make sure it’s rated for outdoor use and is installed appropriately. Here’s how to easily tile over an existing concrete patio… it totally changed the look of our backyard for the better!
