Tartan & Plaid Holiday Decor from Wayfair
You know I have a soft spot for classic Christmas decor, and this year- I hear it’s trending? For me, that’s one aesthetic that will never go out of style… and nothing says “timeless holiday home” quite like a touch of tartan. This year, I grabbed a few new pieces from Wayfair that really blend tradition with texture… table linens, textiles, ribbon, and a few subtle accents that instantly make a vignette feel festive. If you’re also drawn to that warm, layered look, with reds, greens, navy, and cozy classic plaid patterns, this roundup is for you. I’m sure you’ve guessed my holiday theme of the year, but I’m wrapping up my decorating this weekend, so I don’t want to give too much away (annual home tours are coming next week)! Yeah, yeah… I heard Ralph Lauren Christmas is trending, and knew this was my moment to go full send. Can’t wait to show you, but grab some tartan if you’re also headed in this direction, before it sells out for the season!

Why Tartan & Plaid Always Work at Christmas
Why is traditional or classic Christmas trending all of a sudden? Honestly, it’s been around forever and is timeless (in my designer opinion), but if I had to speculate… we’ve been seeing maximalism on the rise in interiors and holiday design the past 5-6 years. This year, everyone is taking it a step further with the typical red and green color palette for a nostalgic and cozy feel. Here’s why I’m into it:

- Design versatility… this works with any aesthetic and is easy to pull off in any home.
- Simple layering… leaning into maximalism, color, and pattern is ideal for layering.
- Season-spanning… many of these pieces transition beautifully into winter, post holidays.
- Instant nostalgia… these patterns feel familiar, cozy, and comforting.

I grabbed the tablecloths, a runner, the pillows, and ribbon to elevate my typical holiday decor this year. I’m sure you were already expecting to see plenty of red, green, and navy in my holiday home tour this year.

Tartan Table Linens
I’m planning to use the table linens on our entry table, dining table, and a console to ground the pattern for a cozy backdrop.
Plaid Pillows & Throws
The easiest way to add tartan to your holiday vignettes this season is to toss a pillow or two onto a chair or sofa, and style a couple throw blankets. These are perfect for adding warmth and creating cohesion between living and dining spaces.
Holiday Accents
Small plaid trays, ribbon, gift wrap, or tableware (I was tempted to grab these coffee mugs) tie everything together. Even a tartan dog bed or kitchen towel adds that subtle festive note.
Mix with Solids
If you’re styling a plaid table, keep dinnerware and glassware simple… white porcelain, clear crystal, or metallic flatware. Polished nickel is having a moment this season, as well!

Classic Tartan Styling Tips
Here’s how I’ve been layering and styling tartan into my existing holiday decor for a designer look…
- Keep it cohesive… choose one dominant plaid per room and echo it in smaller accents (napkins, ribbon around candles, etc.).
- Include natural touches… pinecones, berries, florals, or wood chargers add warmth without competing.
- Add ambiance… soft candlelight and lamplight makes plaid glow beautifully, so don’t skimp on lighting!
- Balance color… offset reds and greens with navy, ivory, and greenery.
- Add texture… layer solid velvet pillows (like pictured below), wool throws, or linen napkins alongside your textural greenery.

FAQ
Classic red-and-green is always a hit, but navy, blackwatch, or neutral plaids feel elevated and can last all winter.
Definitely, but I like to stick to one plaid color palette and pattern per room, so it feels more organized and intentional. For example, I’m doing red in the entryway, green in the living room, and navy in my home office.
Pair it with luxe textures (velvet, marble, polished nickel) and keep your palette dialed. Think timeless, not busy!
Definitely. Quality tartan linens and pillows are evergreen and will never go out of style… you’ll pull them out every December (and they’ll last well into January or February).

Good morning, I’m so glad I was ahead on this year’s Christmas trend! Last year I was craving something different than my typical Christmas look. I bought plaid pillows to mix into what I already had, as well as several options of plaid ribbon. I didn’t end up using the ribbon, but it’s on hand with my Christmas items. I still haven’t decorated (long story), but now I may just lean into it and go full send right along with you! I love your tips for mixing plaid with velvet (CLASSIC), and adding polished touches. Got a link for classic polished nickel napkin rings? And adding branches and berries…Say less Sarah! I already have allll of that on hand! 🤩 How cute is the tree collar??? I already have a woven one, but I may just see if I can add a pop of plaid to it like that one. So fun, so festive! Let’s talk about mixing stripes with plaid… Yay or nay? And any tips if it’s a yay? I’m thinking contrasting. My plaid is a dark background tartan with classic red and pops of green and navy. How do we feel about pairing that with a classic red and white ticking stripe? I’ll have to put them next to each other and see if it’s entirely too busy. This year’s trend gives me Home Alone vibes, in the most nostalgic way- it’s really no surprise that it’s having a moment. Many of us in this generation are craving a return to the simpler times of our childhood, and although the reasons are vast, I love that we’re all collectively embracing this moment. Happy decorating Sarah! I’ll be *finally* getting my decor up this weekend too!
Yesss! Bring on classic Christmas aesthetic. I heard Ralph Lauren holiday was trending and didn’t have to think twice… put me in, coach! Ha! I’m almost finished decorating- I’m hoping to finish up tomorrow because the big tour is this coming week. Can’t wait to share! I snagged those napkin rings you sent. I’m for mixing smaller ticking stripes with plaid. I vote yes. I do feel like my house was made for the Home Alone holiday vibe. I’m going full send, and I’m with you on craving a return to the simpler times of our childhood. Feeling very nostalgic lately! Did you finish decorating?
The tree is done, and I decided (since I love the fall vibe happening in the dining room), I’ll finish this weekend after the Thanksgiving festivities. Not a lot left so it was the best compromise!
That’s perfect!! Happy Thanksgiving to your and your family :)
