Formal Living Room : One Room Challenge – Week 4
This has been a BIG week for our One Room Challenge space, the formal living room. Things are taking shape, we worked our tushies off, and we’re starting to install the first fixtures- including lighting and the fireplace! Click through to read all about it and get the latest progress report…
If you found me through the ORC site, hi there! I’m Sarah, a designer & blogger located in Salt Lake City, UT. You can see my current home renovation here, as well as my previous home tour here. My husband, Emmett, and I are renovating our third house. Join us as we tackle the formal living room. In case you missed previous updates, don’t worry! Catch up here: Week 1 (before images, floor plan, and design plan), Week 2 (demo), Week 3 (drywall).
First, you’ll notice paint on the walls (Sherwin-Williams Aesthetic White 7035). I’m excited to see our new drywall looking so fresh. I was also incredibly happy to hear that Handy Paint Products was an official ORC sponsor this time around because those are the tools we already use to apply paint. I haven’t cut in yet, but I did roll the walls and will share some stories as to why their paint tray is my all-time favorite for rolling. You can fit an entire gallon in there, and it makes painting so much easier!
Next, did you notice the sconces? They’re very pretty and the aged brass finish is perfect. You can find them here from Hudson Valley Lighting (another official ORC sponsor). I wanted something classic and timeless to complete the fireplace vignette. I have yet to install the shades because it’s still a dusty mess in this room, but they’re pleated and beautiful!
Emmett is still working on installing the herringbone hardwood floor. It takes forever because of the intricate pattern. If you missed the tutorial and video on how we do this, check it out in this post! He has been sick all week, but is being a trooper. He has worked on this space after his regular job from 6pm to midnight every single night. Did I mention how lucky I am to have him? Marrying that guy was the best decision I ever made. Our home really is built with love, and the memories we make renovating together are ones I’ll cherish forever.
Now the part you’re probably most excited to hear about… the fireplace! It’s BEAUTIFUL. I’ve been getting so many requests for links, so here you go… click here for the cast limestone mantel / surround and here for the gas insert (you can choose different panels for the back- our herringbone panels aren’t here yet). I know the insert is expensive, but it’s the best of the best. We did a TON of research and wanted something that looked natural, was super safe, and had a thin border- unlike most gas inserts that feel clunky.
I’ll also be devoting an entire post to the fireplace makeover, so stay tuned for that! The 2×4 in the image below is bracing the top portion of the mantel while the masonry adhesive dries. We’re letting it sit like that for another day, just to be safe.
So there you have it- the latest update. What do you think? Check out the progress and updates from the other featured designers below… all of the spaces are looking SO good. I’m also really impressed with the guest designers– be sure to show them some love!
