I love a simple, quick, and creative project! From grocery store floral arranging to pressed flower wall art and hand poured citronella candles… summertime always puts me in the mood to create something seasonal. This project was no different. I felt like I was missing a little color (specifically green), and decided to make a Michael’s moss run. For thirty minutes of my time, these have been making me really happy. Here’s how to assemble them…

Supplies

This is really an affordable project that gives you a high-end designer look. I used a couple bowls I already owned and some recycled materials. The only thing I needed to buy was foam and moss…

Choose a Bowl or Vessel

Peruse your house for a medium to large size bowl. I landed on this ceramic cachepot and this blue & white greek key bowl (the smaller size) from the Tuesday Made shop. You could use anything though… a dough bowl, a serving bowl, something vintage, etc.

Add Filler

First, stuff your bowl with filler… newspaper, plastic bags, bubble wrap, paper towels, etc. It could be any recycled material that fills the lower portion of the vessel. Next, place the floral foam spheres and half balls. I like using these because the moss sticks to them really well, eliminating the need for glue! They also help to give a full, organic, and bulbous shape.

Shape & Style the Moss

Now for the fun part… shaping and styling the moss! Cover the floral foam with bits of moss, pressing and shaping it as you go- into whatever form you like. It’s very similar to arranging florals. You can keep building, adding, and removing until it you’re happy with it.

The moss I purchased had some organic round and oval shapes, that I set aside for the top… “the pretty pieces”. The ones that were brown or discolored, I used as the base layer. I ended up having enough moss for two bowls. I styled one in the kitchen, and one in the formal living room.

FAQ

Could you glue this if you wanted, for a permanent arrangement?

Definitely! I like the versatility of being able to dump the bowl and start over with something new, but if you’re looking for a permanent arrangement- use a hot glue gun, pressing the moss into the glue.

Do you need to water preserved moss?

No! It has been preserved and thus, does not require water. If you use living moss, you would want to mist it with a spray bottle.

How many packs of moss did you buy for these two big arrangements?

Just one… a single pack goes a long way, especially if you use plenty of filler! Like I said, it’s a very budget friendly project- especially in comparison to how much these designer moss arrangements cost.

  1. Good morning! You’re really bringing the quick-but-impactful artsy projects lately! And I am here for it. These moss arrangements provide greenery I don’t need to keep alive and that’s safe for (and hopefully *from*) pets. Hurray. I especially appreciate that I can choose my own vessel. While lovely, the traditional, formal urns I often see don’t suit my vibe. Budget friendly too? Enthusiastic yes. Thanks for yet another fresh idea for my spring/summer mantel. Now I need to noodle on vessels. But first, time to figure out a trip wardrobe that spans 50-90 degrees plus rain and fits in a backpack! If you see me at the airport wearing three sweaters, no you didn’t.🤣 Cheers to a beautiful practically-summer weekend! Happy Pizza Friday, Sarah!🍕

Hi Peggi! I’ve definitely been in quick project mode over here. I’ve just been committed to being creative for an hour everyday, and a lot of these have been the end result. I hope you were able to figure out your 50-90 degree (lol!) trip wardrobe and squish it into a backpack. I’m definitely picturing you layered up at the airport yesterday. Hope you had a good flight and arrived to nice weather! Please post some photos, so we can admire that stunning landscape. Have a great trip, friend!

  2. Happy Friday!
Another great project to get our creativity flowing Sarah! So very pretty, I especially love the moss arrangement in the blue and white bowl. An incredible hit of colors and texture and looks glorious on your coffee table but I bet it would look amazing in any room.
I’ve used moss before in floral arrangements as it looks so beautiful with bulbs such as paperwhites, daffodils or tulips but it never occurred to me to use it on its own. Perfect low arrangement especially for a dining table or even on my tv console would be so pretty and keep the viewing optimal. So cool.
Sorry I didn’t get to commenting on your beautiful staircase runner, oh gosh Sarah it’s stunning and of course the installation looks like perfection. It’s timely as Andrew and I have a stair runner to install and your tips will be incredibly useful. So thank you! Not sure we can do such an impeccable job but we’ll give it our best ☺️ and I’ll read your post a few more times beforehand.
This weekend we are celebrating Andrew for Father’s Day in wine country 🥂 We are booked for a patio lunch and wine tasting so it should be fun. Cheers to another fabulous, creative, and inspiring post Sarah! The arrangements are lovely and looks pretty easy to put together not to mention very budget friendly. Have a beautiful summer weekend ahead friends 😎

Thank you, Colleen! The blue & white bowl is my favorite. I also love it paired with the green. Amazing ideas to pair it alongside paper whites, daffodils, and tulips in the spring. I also appreciate your kind words on our stair runner! The entryway is looking so good and is almost finished. I can’t wait to share it with you. Also pleased to hear the runner post was timely for you and Andrew. I have no doubt you’ll do a fabulous job. I hope Andrew had a splendid Father’s Day… wine country sounds incredible! Hope you two had a lovely weekend in Napa or Sonoma.
