Primary Bath Renovation Update: Plumbing and Skylights
Back in February, we started our biggest renovation to date… the primary bath. It’s a major overhaul with lots of layout changes, architectural updates, and we’re rebuilding the space from the studs. It has been a major undertaking, and I’m long overdue in sharing an update. Despite it being such a big project, we’re making good progress. Click through for the latest and to see where we’re at with plumbing, electrical, drywall, and most exciting- new skylights!

If you missed it, check out the plans for our primary bath renovation, here! I shared the before images, design plan, material selection, and walked through the updated floor plan.
Demo

Demo went fairly quick because we knew we had to remove everything down to the studs. Being a large bathroom on the upper level of our home, the most difficult part was getting everything down the stairs.

Then came a bit of a plot twist… Emmett stepped through the studs into the kitchen. He crashed through the kitchen ceiling (which is thankfully now repaired), but that set us back. I shared more about that fiasco in a video, here. Moving onto what I’m post excited about…
Skylights

Our bathroom was seriously lacking natural light, with one small privacy window. We opted for a giant Velux skylight in the center of the bathroom, along with two sun tunnels– one in the water closet, and one in the walk-in closet.
I can’t believe how incredibly bright and cheerful our bathroom is now… even in its messy, construction state. The skylights also look good with our new roof, for a seamless exterior aesthetic.

Plumbing & Electrical
As you might imagine, the plumbing and electrical all needed to be moved, so that took us a few weeks to wire and run everything. Now that everything is in place, after tile- it will be easy to install our pretty new fixtures!

Fixtures have been arriving in the mail and as you might have guessed… we’re going with timeless polished nickel plumbing. Here are some sneak peeks as I’m opening boxes!

Drywall
I think the biggest update has been the completion of drywall. Now you can really see the new layout and floor plan taking shape after framing. Below is the view into my closet from the bathroom.

We now have a hallway, separation for the bathroom vanities, and a fresh closet for custom cabinets.

Questions?
I’m working on that for my next bathroom update! Hopefully I’ll have it finished soon, as I do think it helps to make sense of the updated layout.
I ordered faucets and shower trim from Rejuvenation this time around. Everything looks timeless and top notch quality.
Yes! We ended up ordering it from Lowe’s and Emmett will do the install… you can see it in the image below.

I hope you enjoyed this peek behind-the-scenes. It always looks worse before it gets better. We’re so close to turning a corner, in the fun part of the project… tile & stone! Here’s to hoping we can keep trudging forward with this renovation after baby arrives. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to maintain this pace, but I am very much looking forward to seeing this space totally finished. I’ll try to share another update soon! Let me know if you have any questions in the comment section.

The skylight addition was a game changer for natural light! The new layout looks so much more functional. So far, are you happy with the layout change? Loving where this is headed and I can’t wait to see the tile and stone added. You’re moving along quickly! I’m crossing my fingers for you that tile can be completed before bay girl arrives; she’s due any day now, right? I hope you had a great weekend!
My sister in law has moon tunnels and they are fantastic. I also love how they and skylights provide so much light that sometimes you think you need to turn the lights off when they aren’t on.
What great progress, and ooooops to crashing through the kitchen ceiling. You’ll probably do another post on the skylight, but did you have to remove a truss chord to get a 24” wide skylight up there? What was the structural process like to remove a portion of the roof truss (is that’s what you did)? And how did you determine the slope of the wall legs coming down in the tunnel of the skylight? We’ve installed lots of 2×4 skylights but a big one would be amazing and I never know how to plan the ceiling cutout and tunnel design up to the skylight.
