It’s time for a new monthly moodboard and this December, I’m feeling a bold & festive pattern that is perfectly suited for the holiday season… tartan! You can probably guess a large portion of this inspiration is probably because of the documentary I just bragged on (read more in this post). I’m wondering why I’ve never used red in my home before? I feel like I need to change that very soon and tartan is the perfect, classic pattern that works year round. Click through to see my finds this month, as well as more inspiration. This is a good one, folks!

With enough tartan, I feel like you don’t even need holiday decor. It’s SO cozy and festive on its own. The eclectic and maximalist living space below is the perfect example. There is so much to love in this space!

December Moodboard Tartan - roomfortuesday.com01: cotton pajama set // 02: tartan apron // 03: tartan mugs // 04: plaid picture frame // 05: dessert plates // 06: wool throw // 07: tartan headboard // 08: flannel sheet set // 09: oven mitt and pot holder // 10: plaid ottoman // 11: dog bed // 12: pillow top bench

From the collage, I feel like the easiest pieces to implement would be the seasonal textiles- the throw (#6), winter bedding (#8), and the cute dog bed (#11). If you’re a bit more daring, try the bench (#12) or the headboard (#7). Other non committal items include the plates (#5), picture frames (#4), or the pajamas (#1). Which are your favorites?

Even in the summer months, you could easily style a pair of tartan pillows for a bold pop of sophisticated color, like the image above. On the other end of the spectrum, check out the image below. Tartan for days and LAYERED!

Are you into this bold pattern, do you only enjoy it during the holidays, or are you game to use it year round? I’d like to say, I’m team year round. My goal for 2020 is to be bold, challenge myself to use colors and patterns that aren’t as “easy”, and push myself as a designer. Cheers to that, my friends!

  1. Woohoo! You know I’m here for color and pattern! I’m an Alexander and a Buchanan, so I definitely love a tartan. The red certainly makes them feel “holiday”, but there are SO many beautiful tartans. That’s a fun rabbithole to fall down…searches “authentic clan tartans.” (cough Outlander cough) Do you know the designer/blogger Scot Meacham Wood? That guy can layer a tartan! And he’s a big Ralph Lauren fan. More color and pattern for 2020? Are you turning into a maximalist? Maybe you’ve been hanging out with me too long! 🤣 💖

    1. I have been hanging out with you for too long!! Haha! I didn’t know Scot Meacham Wood, but now I do thanks to you… incredible! Maybe I am turning into a maximalist. Who knows what 2020 will bring! xo

  2. I’m wearing Blackwatch as we speak! When I win $100m I’m moving to Connecticut to live in a Ralph Lauren store 😀

    1. You and me both!! It’s so beautiful!

  3. Beautiful and warm and cozy!

    1. I think so too, Jen :)

  4. Very classic, and bold, too!

I’m definitely team plaid! Red seems more wintery to me, where the greens and blues (and yellows, etc.) are more year-round.

    1. Yay!! Great point- there are plenty of other colors of tartan that are probably more suitable for the entire year. I do love red during the holidays though :)

  5. I have always loved Ralph Lauren and the way he puts patterns together. My favorite is denim and plaid. Will be interesting to see how you design with plaids. Up until a couple of years ago, red was in my home and holiday decor. I removed most of it. Some day I will love it again or through your design Sarah.

    1. Me too! He’s a design genius :) Hope you had a wonderful weekend, Danna!
