The Beginnings of a Guest Room & A Good Mattress

bedroomI’ve been holding out on posting any kind of interior shots because I’ve been playing a waiting game. New windows have been installed, but we’re still waiting on millwork prior to painting and fully furnishing the bedrooms in our home. This so called waiting game was fine and dandy until we excitedly found out we were hosting a house guest this Thanksgiving. That tossed a monkey wrench in my plan to wait to reveal the entire room at once. Lucky for you guys, I’m going to share it in phases, as it evolves… and guess what every bedroom begins with? Because you guys are so smart- you definitely guessed the bed! Obviously you’re right and with that comes the beginnings of our guest room… a bed with a good mattress.

I first discovered Tuft & Needle on Instagram and fell in love with their gorgeous packaging, typography, and images. I was intrigued by the concept of their mattresses but wondered if they were worth the hype. The next thing I know, Emmett’s father is calling to let us know he’s coming to visit for Thanksgiving and I had to quickly pull the trigger on a mattress. A few days later, it arrived at our door…

tuftneedle-packageWe (and by we, I mean Emmett) brought in the relatively heavy box and began setup. I was sort of surprised that a queen mattress fit into this average sized box. I’m pretty sure my beloved Dyson vacuum arrived in a larger package. Ha!

tuftneedleIt was kind of mesmerizing to watch this thing inflate. I expected it to smell funky coming out of the box, but to my surprise, there really wasn’t a strong unpleasant odor.

tuftneedle-instructionsThe queen mattress fit perfectly into my new velvet bed frame, and is actually super comfortable. If you like a plush, but dense mattress, you’d probably enjoy sleeping on one of these.

Finn actually isn’t allowed on the bed, but as soon as the mattress finished expanding, he hopped right up!! Emmett and I looked at each other shaking our heads. I guess he thought it was a giant dog bed? With puppy dog eyes like that, it was hard to scold him.

giant-schnauzerEven though this mattress lives in the guest room, I wanted to test it (I like to keep my house guests happy). After a night sleeping in the guest room, I’m thinking we might have to get another mattress for our master bedroom. Seriously! I slept so well.

cozy-bedroomIf you’re wondering about the bed itself, I spontaneously purchased it (find it here!) and assembled it all by myself while Emmett was out of town- yeah, girl power!! It took me all of four hours because there were a bajillion pieces, but I’m pretty sure it’s not falling apart anytime soon. I’m just happy we have a semi-put together guest room for my father-in-law to enjoy while he visits this week. It might not be painted or pretty just yet, but I know for certain it’s really comfortable.

tuftneedle-collaborationFinn perched on top of the empty box when everything was said and done. I guess he approves of how the guest room is coming along. Stay tuned as this room evolves. You won’t want to miss the panel moulding, wall sconces, and decor I have planned for this space. And of course- if you were considering one of these mattresses, my honest vote would be to go for it! I’m totally buying one for our king size bed as well.

*This post is brought to you in collaboration with Tuft & Needle. I received a queen size mattress from them in exchange for an honest review. All content, ideas, and words are my own. I’m so fascinated by the whole mattress in a box concept. So thrilled to learn you had a good experience!

    1. Yes! I wasn’t sure if it was worth the hype, but was super surprised by the quality. I suppose mattress technology has come a long way because I LOVE it! xoxo

I am OBSESSED with Finn! My dogs think any new rug, blanket, towel, etc. has to be for them! Because why would we need them? Haha

    1. Ha!! You can have him. lol, jk… but he is a holy terror sometimes! Exactly- rugs, towels, blankets, and mattresses MUST be for them. This gave me a good laugh. Happy Thanksgiving week, Leah! xo

Thank you for this post. Was wondering about the bedding too. You mentioned on IG that blanket is from Target. Are the sheets from there as well? Could you provide name of bedding set or a link? Thanks!

    1. So glad you liked it, Laura. The bedding is from Authenticity 50! I actually have a post on the bedding coming next week- so stay tuned. I had no idea how to buy sheets until I chatted with the founders of that company. It’s super interesting! xo
