Kitchen Reno – Progress Update #2

kitchen plans and renderings on ipadI’m still in New York for my Domino trip, but I’ve been getting some kitchen updates from Emmett the past few days. I also wanted to share a really exciting line rendering of what the plan looks like so you guys can begin to visualize the space! Click through for a brand new kitchen reno progress report…

In case you missed the first post (and hideous before images), check that out here! Since the last update, the subfloor is repaired and finished! We’ll be living with plywood floors until the tile arrives. I’m guessing it’ll be 2018 before we get around to installing it. Soooo- the actual floor will be done next year, and in the meantime we’ll be schlepping dust around with our house shoes.

Kitchen DemoYou’ll notice the bulkhead above the cabinetry is gone, hooray! It was purely cosmetic with no duct work or wiring behind it, so demoing that actually went pretty fast.

Installing InsulationHere’s the latest… the drywall has mostly been demoed, and Emmett insulated the exterior wall. I’ve mentioned it before, but our house had zero insulation! Every time we renovate a room, we add insulation and it’s making our house so much more efficient.

Insulation in the KitchenHe has also been working on framing out a couple walls… we’re slightly opening the walkway from the kitchen to living room and it’s shifting to the right. In addition, we’ll be adding a small wall in between the dining room and back entryway / laundry room. Something about eating food right where people kick off their shoes and the dogs go in and out freaks me out. You can see below, he has it framed out and ready for drywall.

It may seem counterintuitive to close in a space, rather than open it up, but I think this is going to be best from a functional standpoint and for a person who is severely OCD when it comes to cleanliness.

Framing Walls in The KitchenAlthough right now it’s looking like a complete mess, here’s a simple line rendering that will help show you how the space will evolve over the next couple months. It’s amazing how a simple line drawing can get me so excited! When I’m feeling down about the kitchen or living in a constant mess, I look at the renderings and am assured it will all be worth it. I’m excited to see it come together in the coming months. Talk about a great start to 2018!

Gibson Kitchen PlansThe sink is staying in the same location, but we’ve reconfigured the other appliances. I think this floor plan is going to be SO much more functional. I haven’t rendered the dining area yet, but you can see where I’m going with it. There will be an eat-in area in front of the dining room window with an L-shaped bench.

If you’re wondering about the laundry room, we’re not even focusing on that right now. It is open concept to the kitchen, but we’ve opted to tackle that as “phase two”.

Wall FramingI’m hoping to arrive home from NYC to a bunch of boxes. I’m expecting the rest of our plumbing fixtures and range hood to come in this week. I’m also arriving home to house guests. My family flew out to visit for Christmas a week early, so we’re actually entertaining house guests amongst the mess. Ha! It’s a good thing my parents opted for a hotel, and it’s just my brother taking over the guest room. He’s used to our crazy renovating antics and looks past our mess in exchange for a couple good ski days and his favorite cocktail. Here’s to hoping Emmett cleaned a little and shuffled a bunch of boxes filled with kitchen things from the guest room back to the kitchen. We’ll shall see.

With that being said, I might be MIA the rest of the week. With family visiting and lots of travel lately, I’ve been stretched super thin. I have a few posts drafted for next week, then I’m taking the entire week of Christmas off. I’m welcoming a much needed break! Hope you guys are having an amazing week. xox
