For the Love of DIY – The UpSkill Project

For the Love of DIY - The UpSkills Project - roomfortuesday.comIt’s no secret that Emmett and I feel passionately about taking the DIY route when it comes to our home renovation. You’ve witnessed project after project, and at this point- it’s safe to say we’re addicted to the rewarding process of making our home look and feel like us. I’m SO excited to announce I’m partnering with Lowe’s to promote a really amazing local opportunity here in Salt Lake City! Have you guys heard about The UpSkill Project? You can enter for a chance to win $2,000 toward the project of your choosing and expand your DIY skill set, getting professional help and instruction from Lowe’s. Click through for more…

Lowe’s will be choosing up to 5(!) Salt Lake City winners, and I’ll be helping with one of the projects!  Entering is really easy- you’ll submit a short video showing the space you want to transform, the skills you’d like to learn and why. It could be painting, tiling, constructing built-ins or shelving, landscaping, adding mouldings or millwork, updating a bathroom vanity, or a number of other valuable DIY skills! Click here for all of the details and rules for entering The UpSkill Project Contest.

Measuring for DIY ProjectsIf you’re wondering why I’m so stoked to be part of this, one of the main reasons I blog is to empower others to tackle home improvement projects that might seem out of reach. No matter your skill level, nothing is out of grasp. Just because you don’t have a giant budget to hire contractors, does not mean a beautiful finished project is unattainable. It’s all about learning and building your skillset, as well as your confidence to tackle a project. Emmett and I like to learn and complete our projects the right way, and our end goal is always to have a professional looking result (that looks like we hired top notch contractors, but without the hefty price).

Refinishing Hardwood Floors DIYNeither of us are formally trained in carpentry, contracting, or building, but it’s something we’re passionate about and have learned quite a bit about over the years. We also have a “we can do that!” mentality. If there’s something we’d like to learn, we research, ask professionals lots of questions, and dive in. If we can learn and achieve beautiful results, I promise you can too!

We get a lot of “how to” questions when it comes to DIY projects so I’m also eager to share, that on June 16th, a local Salt Lake City Lowe’s will be hosting a FREE Community Workshop that Emmett and I will be attending. I hope you’ll come say hello and learn from the pros at Lowe’s skills such as tiling, plumbing, drywall repair, painting and upcycling furntiture. I’ll post more about them closer to the event date, so you can mark your calendar.

For the Love of DIY - The UpSkills Project - roomfortuesday.comIf you’re not local and want to enter the contest, don’t worry… there are still opportunities for you to participate! The UpSkill Project is coming to a number of cities across the country throughout the year. Click here and scroll down for a lineup of the tour. Folks in Buffalo, NY- your market is happening simultaneously with Salt Lake… so go enter!! Get those videos submitted- the contest ends on March 12th.

Local friends and winners, we’ll be seeing you soon! I’m looking forward to seeing what skills the selected winners will be learning. I’m crossing my fingers for a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room to help with.
