Custom Closet In My Home Office (+A Video!)
I’ve been anxiously awaiting the day to reveal our next custom closet! If you missed the first one, check out our brand new (super functional) guest room closet. This time around, I designed a unit for my home office. Click through to see how it turned out, and to see my very first RFT short video!
The before images are about as bland as you’d expect, but I wanted to accurately depict what we were dealing with.
Obviously the doors are new, but I actually decided to nix them for the time being. We were so pleased with the custom closet and it’s ability to look built-in, we decided to leave the doors off. Maybe we’ll use them elsewhere in the house, or keep them in storage… just to leave our options open, should we want closed storage again.
Alright, are you ready for the after shot?! It’s a huge difference. SO much better. Thus far, we’ve updated the closet, light fixtures, windows, and have started on trim… we’ve yet to address the paint, so disregard that. In the meantime, I’m basking in the glory of this beautiful closet!
Much like the guest room closet, I designed this unit with functionality in mind. I wanted a place to store supplies, hang files, and stow away office things. Since this room will function as my home office, I didn’t need any hanging space. This is a “no clothing” type of closet. As I mentioned above, it turned out so amazing, we removed the doors, and I styled the top half. I love that it feels balanced and I get both open and closed storage.
The shelving is nice and deep, which fits so many practical things I use on a daily basis.
From design books and inspiration to business cards and flash drives (in THAT amazing bowl), it’s nice to leave some items out and accessible.
In regards to the finishing details, I again selected a classic, stain nickel finish for the drawer hardware.
The drawers come standard with soft close mechanics (so nice!). It’s also amazing to have a place to store items of awkward shapes and sizes- like design paint decks. Despite my office being unfinished, I’m already feeling more organized.
Alright- onto the fun part (I totally buried the lead)… the video! When searching for closet systems, I chose Closetmaid because of their customization features. I like to be in control and design everything myself, so I wanted to share how I use their SpaceCreations design tool. It’s super easy!
I’m not going to lie, I hate being on the other side of the camera and videos make me especially nervous. Luckily, I have an amazing videographer here in Salt Lake who produced this for me and was able to keep me laughing and comfortable the entire time. One of my goals this year is to implement more video, because I think they make things easier to understand and they’re a fun way to connect (despite my awkwardness). What do you guys think? The next video is going to be really cool- Emmett and I are installing his and hers closets in our master and the entire thing is going to be filmed!
Anyway, that’s a wrap on the office closet. It’s safe to say my expectations were certainly exceeded. What do you guys think?
