Bath Update

Back in February, I posted our bathroom renovation. Here’s the story: everything was going fine until one day Kalyn said, “Our bath feels kind of beachy.” It dawned on me. He was right and I kind of hated it. It has taken me a little while to find my personal style and although it might have seemed wonderful at the time, I felt like I needed to make it my own. So, here we are, ten months down the road and I’m painting… again. Here’s what our one and only bathroom is looking like these days:

Granted, it has come a long way from the condition in which we purchased the home, but I’m glad small changes and a little paint have helped it feel less coastal. Although I love the cool California interiors, I have to face it- we live in the Midwest and our house needs to reflect a little more of the location. I’m feeling much happier about the direction and it definitely feels more like my aesthetic.

What version of our bathroom is your favorite? Navy and coastal? Or black, white, and warm wood tones? I’m anxious to hear feedback. While you’re debating which version is best, I wanted share close-ups of a couple of my new favorite bath products. I’m loving lots from LeLabo and Tatine (look at that packaging!!). If you’re in my area, Preen currently has Tatine items in stock- go check them out.

  1. Love it, where are the bath mats from?

  2. The Tatine candles are amazing! I got the Forest Floor one for my sister for her birthday.

    1. I’ll have to try the candles! Love love love the hand cleanser + lotion though.

  3. Hi, just wanted to tell you, I enjoyed this blog post.
It was helpful. Keep on posting!

    1. Thank you for visiting!

  4. I love it! I liked your bathroom before too, but this feels right for your home. The black, white, and wood combination is just gorgeous.

    1. Thanks so much, Aileen! Hope you had a great holiday.

  5. I actually really love both versions. I think im more drawn to it before, but im a color lover. I definitely think the new update fits with your home and sense of style better:)

    1. Thanks so much Shavonda!:)

Love how you changed the entire feel of the room with realitively minor updates. I’m a fan of the new look over the previous; while the blue was also nice, this seems more sophisticated and mature.

I happened to recognize the art over your loo by Fanny Nushka Moreaux – are you lucky enough to have the original? It had already sold when I looked. If not, how do you like the quality of the print?

    1. Thank you! I’m happier with the updated look as well. Unfortunately the artwork is not an original, but the print is really great! It’s a hand finished impasto, so it’s very textural. If you would like a print, let me know- the interior design firm I work with carries them. Thanks for stopping by. xo

I love how your original tile and fixture choices allow you to change directions in this bathroom with just a few subtle accessory changes. Makes me feel better about going all white and chrome for the base materials!

    1. Thank you, Bethany! It’s always a good idea to choose neutral or classic permanent materials, then update with colorful or trendy accessories. Good luck with your bathroom renovation!

  8. Hello,

I’m interested in finding out the model information for your Delta faucet and drain. I’m going to be purchasing the IKEA Godmorgon/Ovensvik cabinet and sink combo and want to get nicer fixtures to jazz it up a bit. Were you able to use a standard size pop-up drain? Thanks so much! Your bathroom is an inspiration. :-)

    1. Hi Karen! I have these faucets installed. We ended up using the Ikea chrome drain, I believe… because it was a better fit and I didn’t mind the way it looked with the faucet. The drains are pretty simplistic and minimal. Hope this helps! Good luck! xo

I’m so in love with your bathroom. What color of black did you paint your IKEA vanity? I love it and am wanting to paint mine as well. Thank you.

    1. Thanks so much Rachael! The vanity is painted Black Panther by Benjamin Moore. xo

  10. Hi Sara! Beautiful bathroom!! We recently installed a similar vanity from Ikea for our hall bath, but am wondering if you caulk the line space right behind the faucets that touches the wall? We did not tile that wall, so I am being more careful not to splash water. I should probably caulk it to prevent water dripping down. :)

    1. Thanks, Jennifer! Great question- yes, we absolutely caulked that area. Obviously we don’t have tile either… and surprisingly it hasn’t been an issue. Being painted white, it still looks the same as when I painted it three / four years ago. I’d recommend a quality paint that is durable and easy to clean!

Hi Sarah! Love the feel and look of your bathroom!!! Just wondering how the Ikea cabinets have held up. We will be installing the cabinet in our kids bathroom.

    1. Thank you, Elizabeth! Great question. The vanity held up SO well. We’re no longer living in that home, but after living with it for 4 years- I have to say, I was quite impressed. I painted it twice and it didn’t chip. The drawers are soft close and even with a lot of weight, they didn’t bow or malfunction. So yes- overall, a pleasant surprise. Good luck with your kids bath! xo

  12. Can you please tell me what is the name of the white paint used on the walls? Thanks!

    1. I believe we used Sherwin Williams Pure White!

  13. hi, love love your bathroom. I have the same vanity and i wanted to add legs to it. which model legs did you go with?

    1. Hi there! This particular vanity is no longer being sold unfortunately… it only came with one square “leg” style option. Hope this helps! xo
