A Serene Master Bedroom + A Giveaway

master bedroomI’m excited to finally share the full reveal of my serene master bedroom. This room has been a work in progress for the past year. When designing this space, I wanted to create a room that felt calm and cool with lots of natural light, neutral colors, and deep hues of blue. Blue is a color I tend to gravitate towards in decor because it always leaves me feeling happy.

master bedroom

master bedroomI recently updated my nightstands … did you see the before images?! Sarah found the faux bamboo pair for me at the thrift store and I gave them a total facelift. Making a small change to a room can have such a huge impact. Not to mention, they add so much character to the bedroom. By using a piece of furniture with built-in storage, function was added to an already tight space.

master bedroom

master bedroom

master bedroomThis room also presented challenges in regards to size. As you can probably tell from the photos, this room is small – like a box! So, I wanted to be very minimal with furniture and decor, in an effort to avoid clutter. Believe it or not, when walking through this house for the first time, there was a four-post bed and an oversized dresser crammed into this space. Opening up the room (without physically moving walls) took a little creativity. Having a tiny house means taking advantages of every single space. I recently transformed the bedroom next to the master into my dressing room. This gives me a place to get ready, store clothing, and provides seating… since the master is SO small.

master bedroom

master bedroomAlthough small spaces can be difficult to floor plan, at the end of the day your bedroom should be a place you can retreat to and feel relaxed in. After putting much thought and planning into the space, the master bedroom definitely plays this role in my home- my husband and I are really happy with the end result! Tell me – what is your favorite design aspect of your bedroom? Is it your happy place or do you wish it had a certain feature?

Comment below for a chance to win two 8×10 fine art photographs of Paris by Danielle Moss of The Everygirl (as seen in the bedroom).

UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed. Thank you for entering and congratulations to Amanda for winning the artwork!

  1. I really love my bedroom but it took me a while to feel that way. I am a single 23 year old and when I first had my own room that wasn’t a dorm room, I was afraid of buying things that were too feminine or juvenile. However, I ended up with a room that looked generic and not me at all. So now I buy things I love, and they generally always work together! I’m living up not having to share my bedroom with a partner yet and decorating it how I want to. :)

    1. Jacqueline says:

It is all about finding and buying pieces you love so your home is a reflection of YOU! Being married sure is wonderful, but when else in your life will you be able to decorate just for you? Enjoy it now! Thanks for sharing, Annie. :-)

  2. Love the neutral color palette and the simplicity! 😍

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you, Olivia. I am all about those neutrals! :-)

  3. Leah Prevost says:

My bedroom changes all the time lol. I’m trying to get it to a point where I can be done switching stuff out all the time. But my favorite design aspect would be my bed. I found it on Craigslist and it pulls the room together. I have eclectic taste so I try and keep my big pieces neutral and switch out accessories and artwork to change things up. I love the color of your headboard, it ties in with the blues so nicely. It looks amazing Jacqueline!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you for the sweet comments, Leah. I totally understand switching things out. This bedroom is a year (or more) in the making and we are finally happy with it. It is always fun to switch small pieces out for a change like you described. Best of luck finding your happy place with your bedroom design! Thanks for stopping by. :-)

  4. Wow. I absolutely love the little details of this room – I also have a tiny bedroom (only enough room to walk around the bed!) and while it is a happy place, I would like it to be a little less cluttered and a little bit more storage friendly. My husband’s grandparents gave me a beautiful desk which I use as my dressing table – it is definitely my favourite part of the room. My design challenge is to find a place for my husband to dump his clothes where it doesn’t drive me crazy! I will be using your photos as my design inspiration – thank you for sharing!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Aww thank you so much for the nice compliments, Bryony. Believe it or not, I have the same trouble with my husband dumping clothes right by his closet and laundry hamper. Ha! I like to use small baskets or maybe even a piece of furniture with storage to help de-clutter tiny spaces. The desk sounds amazing – and what a memorable piece! Thanks for stopping by. :-)

    2. Oksana from FOXYOXIE.com says:

Bryony, have you considered a storage bench at the foot of the bed? Ever since we got one, I’ve been so pleased with the decrease in bedroom clutter. There is that occasional pair of socks to deal with every now and then (ha!), but overall, it’s surprising just how much stuff you can fit into one! The only challenge would be to figure out where to put it if you don’t have the space at the foot of the bed; in that case, there’s also the option of a platform bed with drawers underneath the mattress. I’ve seen quite a few stylish options around the Internet!

      1. Thank you so much for these fantastic ideas Jacqueline and Oksana – I will start hunting for a bench and baskets ASAP before I start throwing my husband’s clothes out the window 😊.

      2. Jacqueline says:

Great ideas, Oksana! We definitely have the issue of no space at the foot of the bed, but a platform bed is a nice option to think about too. Maybe one of these will work for you, Bryony?

  5. Oksana from FOXYOXIE.com says:

Jacqueline, I have been head-over-heels with this room since you first shared the nightstand DIY. For the record, I’ve also been perusing thrift stores and Craigslist in hopes of finding wicker decor (possibly even nightstands!), as I am completely smitten with what you did to yours!

Would you mind sharing the paint color of the room? My husband and I are renovating an old house and recently painted the master a moody gray, but the purple undertones are a bit overpowering for my tastes, so I would ultimately like to go a little lighter and more neutral.

The master bedroom in our current rental, however, is quite lovely – very neutral and relaxing. In fact, I shared a little tour of the space a few months ago, if you’d like to take a look! Although it’s nowhere near perfect, and I’m definitely looking forward to starting from scratch in the new house, I can’t help but appreciate it for what it is.

Winning the photographs of Paris would be a dream. Despite what many people say, it’s my favorite place on earth, and the artwork would serve as a lovely reminder of that.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hello Oksana! By the way – I am obsessed with your name…so beautiful! I am so glad to hear you love the room. Your comments are so sweet. :-) I hope you can find some nice treasures at a thrift store somewhere to makeover. The paint color is “Rhinestone” by Sherwin Williams. We also used it in my dressing room and I love it! I love what you have done with your room so far. I will look forward to seeing what you do in the new house. Best of luck on winning the photos…I am sure they would go great with your decor.

  6. @sarahspy says:

I second what others have said about how beautiful the details are in this room, and how nicely they stand out within the simple bright white background. My favorite detail is the gold handles on the nightstand drawers!

Would love to win this prize, too :) sknowles5@gmail

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Sarah! Thank you for the nice comments on our master bedroom space. Those gold handles have a funny story behind them…you can see more in the Nightstand DIY post if you wish. Long story short – I tried polishing and painting them but they looked TERRIBLE so I had to redo them. Best of luck on the giveaway!

  7. Mariah Langer says:

I’m really impressed with your ability to layer textures without creating bulk. Mixing multiple whites can be tricky, but this is perfectly pulled off. There is a definite attention to detail that really speaks for the room.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Aww thank you, Mariah! What sweet compliments. We are definitely very happy with the calming and warm space. Thank you so much!

  8. Looks great, so bright & airy! Artwork helps make the space come alive.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thanks Holly! I am glad you like it. :-)

  9. Ashley | Free Wills Studio says:

I LOVE the calmness of this room. I tend to go a little more (a lot more) maximalist, but I always envy when a design is simplified just right. It’s so zen. I especially love how you’ve used texture and the pops of mudcloth are wonderful! :)

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you Ashley! The minimal design really works well for this small space. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your kind words. :-)

  10. Samantha McClelland says:

Beautiful – I love every room you decorate! We just went with dark and moody for our master bedroom (BohemianBlack from Sherwin Williams); but I am always drawn to the serene, all white bedrooms! I seriously need to get over my cream trim issues and just paint a room in my house white!

I’d love to add two prints to our collection, we need to add some art work to either our half bath or our bedroom!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Samantha! Thank you for stopping by. The moody bedroom paint color sounds so fun! I get the trim issues – when we moved in we painted ALL of the woodwork in our house. It took forever but I am so glad we did. Best of luck on the giveaway! :-)

  11. Kimberly Brown says:

Looks just as beautiful in real life as the photos 😀 I can’t wait to get our bathroom done so we can move on to finishing our bedroom!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Aww thanks Kim! I am so excited to see your bathroom when it is finished. It is going to look amazing!

  12. Beautiful space! Those photos would look great in my master too… Just sayin’ ;)

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you, Monica! Good luck on the giveaway. :-)

  13. Love your table lamps. Do you mind sharing where they are from?

    1. Hi Julia! They’re actually from Target… but I believe they’re sold out. xo

  14. This bedroom just makes me go ahhhhh. So beautiful!
And the prints are too :)

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you so much, Ashley! Thanks for stopping by. :-)

  15. Christine says:

I love our artwork – everything else is a work in progress! We live in a house that’s about 110 years old, and lots of people did lots of ugly stuff to it along the way. Trying to bring back its former glory!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Christine! Our home is also still a work in progress. We have rooms that are completely done (like the bedroom) and rooms that are still empty. Making your house a home you love takes time, energy and $$. Our home is 75 years old, and although we love the charm, people have definitely made some poor decisions along the way. The fun part is bringing it back to life. Best of luck to you guys! Thanks for saying “hi”! :-)

  16. This room is calm personified. I love it! I’m a new reader, first time commenter (on any blog, ever). I’m also a new homeowner with a seemingly endless to-do/wish list! The master bedroom hasn’t really been touched yet but thankfully it has a lot of built in character. I truly love unique ceilings and ours are whitewashed wood panels which I realize sound weird but are really fresh and bright. Anyway, thanks for sharing your space. It’s lovely.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Sarah! We feel honored to have your first blog comment ever. :-) We also have some fun detailing on our ceilings…I love the character it brings to the room! Keep up the hard work on your home and checking off items on your to-do list. Thanks for the sweet comments! We hope you come back soon.

  17. Oh what a beautiful bedroom!
And the prints are lovely! We got to visit Paris last summer so it will always hold a special spot in my heart 😊
We are remodeling our first home so our bedroom currently holds a bed 😏 But I’m looking forward to finding side tables and finishing touches.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Lydia! So fun you were able to visit Paris. My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe next summer and I hope we get to visit. :-) Good luck on finishing your bedroom and the giveaway!

  18. Love how serene and calm your bedroom is! I’m pretty fond of efficient bedrooms – you don’t need a lot of space to relax and sleep – and this one nails it! Also…goodness could I use two prints of Paris – I’m still in the nothing-on-the-bedroom-walls phase, 9 months after moving in :0

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Cathy! Thanks for the kind comments. :-) Our bedroom is small but perfect for us! Good luck on the giveaway – I am sure they would look great in your bedroom.

  19. My favorite parts of my bedroom:
    – My grey headboard with nail head border: My BF’s mom got it for me for Christmas because I wouldn’t stop crying over how our room looked unfinished. I finally feel like an adult now!
    – My framed photo collage I made with Social Print Studio prints: they print directly from your Instagram and the little photos are ADORABLE. I made a heart out of our favorite memories for above our bed.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi there, Nicole! Your grey headboard sounds beautiful. Also, love the idea of having fun memories hanging in your room. Best of luck on the giveaway. :-)

  20. Marie Clements says:

Such a beautiful room! I have a similar comforter (white and ruched) that I was considering saving up to replace. But I love the way you styled yours– maybe I just need a facelift with a throw blanket at the foot of the bed and pillows! Your African mudcloth one is so cute.

One quick question– is the jute painful on bare feet? Love the look and curious about the comfort.

Thanks for the tour! And cool collab with Danielle Moss– loved the tour of her apartment a couple weeks ago as well!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Marie! Thanks for stopping by and for the sweet compliments. :-) You can easily give a simple white duvet or comforter a facelift with a throw or fun pillows. If you were thinking of saving up for a more expensive comforter, that may be a more affordable way to go. The jute is from RugsUSA and is surprisingly not too uncomfortable on bare feet. Is does have some imperfections in the braiding, but I actually like it that way. If you are worried about it, you could always layer a wool or cotton rug on top of the jute to add some texture. I love Danielle Moss’ space as well! I would love to do a collab with her, but I actually just have an extra set of photos I purchased and thought it would be fun to use for a giveaway. Best of luck! :-)

    2. Jacqueline says:

  21. I love your bedroom. I also have a small master. I would love to know the color of your walls. I love every shade of blue.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Brandi! The wall color is “Rhinestone” by Sherwin Williams. We have it in two rooms in our home and love it. Thanks for stopping by!

  22. I’m a actually finally making over my bedroom. Soooo happy to start making it a place I will love. So far I e painted the walls white and next I am going to try and refinish the 90s dark brown/black furniture. I want to create a light airy calm place I can enjoy relaxing in. Can’t wait for the finished result :)

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Krystal! Your ideas for your bedroom makeover sound beautiful! I am sure the space will come together wonderfully into a space you really love and enjoy spending time in. Best of luck!

  23. Dana Moss says:

Jacqueline! Your bedroom is perfection! So soft, bright, and lovely. I’d never leave if I were you :-)
Thanks for the giveaway–obsessed with Danielle Moss!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Aw, thanks Dana! It is definitely a space I love and feel relaxed in. Best of luck on the giveaway and thanks for stopping by! :-)

  24. I love the lightness and simplicity of the room, especially the white chair styled so cute!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Amanda, You have been chosen as a winner for our Paris print giveaway! Please email me at jacqueline@roomfortuesday.com with your mailing address within 24 hours to claim your prize. Congratulations! :-)

  25. I love your style and wished I could have gone to your garage sale! Your kitchen is a dream.

    1. Thanks so much, Tara!! We’re considering doing an online sale next time… and soon we’ll be adding a “shop” section (more like a store) to the site with curated products. So please look for that soon! xo

  26. Ann Heltzel says:

I love the white walls and simplicity and functionality of the room. The art is perfect!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thank you, Amy! Best of luck on the giveaway.

  27. My bed room is my happy place! I have a black DIY damask headboard and a matching re upholstered wing back chair with a french provincial dresser that I’d really done black that used to be my father’s. The theme is elegant black and white with hints of grey. All i need is a chandler 😆

Love the blog! Thanks to you I have built up the courage to try a DIT abstract arthe piece for our living room! I shall let you know how it goes!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, Megan! Your bedroom sounds beautiful and I am eager to see the DIY when you are done.

  28. I love this space! It’s such a beautiful, minimal way to brighten and open up a smaller bedroom.

The one design feature that I would love is a window in the bedroom. We live in a two bedroom apartment, and my home office claimed the larger bedroom. I think really large prints would be a nice way to introduce imagery into the space, mimicking a window.

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Samantha! Such a good idea on the artwork. I can’t imagine not having a window in my bedroom, so I am sure that is tough for you. I appreciate you leaving such sweet compliments…best of luck on the giveaway!

  29. I love the simple sophistication of this room! (Though I know it takes quite a bit of work to master the “simple”) It all flows together so beautifully and is so livable! This is the goal I have for my next bedroom!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Aww thanks Kate! You’re too sweet. This bedroom took over a year to “master” or feel like a room we loved. Sometimes good things take time and that’s ok. :-)

  30. Stephanje says:

My favorite part of our master is definitely the light that comes in through all our windows! May not be the best thing in the early morning hours (thank god for sleep masks..) but it’s so great to come home to a room filled with natural light

    1. Jacqueline says:

Hi Stephanje! I LOVE natural light – in fact, the more the better! You are right though…only during waking hours. ;-) Good luck on the giveaway!

  31. Jennifer Hayden says:

One of my main goals for this summer is to update the bedroom. This bedroom feels calm but also romantic. Love it!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thanks for the sweet comment, Jennifer! I wish you luck on updating your bedroom – I am sure it will look amazing when complete. :-)

  32. I love how airy the room looks. It definitely helps the room appear big. It gives me ideas for our smaller master!

    1. Jacqueline says:

Thanks Leah! Making the room feel bigger than it actually is was a challenge for sure. I am glad to hear that you think it worked out well! Good luck on your own bedroom. :-)
